Adapt Biogas approached Red Leaf Enviro with a request for the design and installation of an access haul road at their site in Murrow, Norfolk. The road would provide visiting tank trucks to the site access to safely load stored gas from site storage tanks as the current access road posed a number of health and safety concerns for these vehicles. The existing access route was uneven and presented a tipping risk, which could result in damage and injury to not only the driver and vehicle, but also other staff and animals on site. Another issue was the lack of turning space for these vehicles.

A solution needed to be found that would make access safer, easier and remove the need for tank trucks to reverse to exit the site once loaded.

Adapt Biogas discussed these access issues with Red Leaf Enviro, contracting them to design and install a suitable access solution that would mitigate all health and safety concerns associated with the current access road and provide safe traversal for tank trucks visiting the site.

Red Leaf Enviro designed a one-way access road, that included the current access road route, but with a continuation of the road down a slim unused section of the site between a maize silage clamp and additional storage area. This created a single loop around the site, allowing the Flogas vehicles access to the storage tanks, then a clear exit without the need to reverse on site.

The ground in the unused area was prepared and levelled, with the existing uneven ground undergoing preparation to ensure it was well compacted and level. Once this groundwork was completed and formwork for the road had been installed, concrete was poured into the formwork, providing a 200mm, level concrete pad on which the lorries could travel. Finally, gates were installed to ensure vehicles could not enter the tanks from the wrong direction.
