Red Leaf Enviro was contacted by Dunmow Waste Management to design and install a new concrete storage pad at one of their waste management sites in Essex. The area where the pad was to be situated was in use but skips and materials were being placed on the bare ground, which in turn was extremely soft. This soft ground had started causing a number of issues, mainly for the efficiency of the site; as vehicles loading and offloading skips and materials would regularly become stuck, especially in wet weather. This not only meant time was spent dislodging vehicles but also provided a number of safety concerns both for drivers and ground staff on site.

A strong concrete pad was needed to allow the storage of skips and vehicles without the risk of becoming stuck in the soft ground.

The Red Leaf team set about designing the new pad, ensuring it would not be affected by heaving of the soil beneath, had adequate drainage and could safely support the weight of both full and empty skips, and the vehicles and machinery that needed to traverse the pad. Once the design had been completed the team proceeded to start work on the project.

The first stage of the project required the ground level to be raised and compressed, with a suitable substrate layered over and compacted. Once the ground had been prepared to a suitable level and quality, formwork and a damp proof membrane were installed. The concrete was poured directly into the formwork and rebar, creating a strong, level pad that would support the weight of skips and vehicles. Once the concrete pad had been completed, a number of block work bays were installed to help contain some of the materials stored on site.
