Red Leaf Enviro were contacted by SunSkips to decommission an old, disused recycling plant; and then subsequently install a new concrete pad for the storage of materials, skips and heavy machinery. The old plant took up a large portion of the SunSkips site in Suffolk and was no longer being used, it’s removal would allow for an expansion of available storage space on site and increase the overall throughput of the site. This presented a more complex decommissioning project than simply removing the building and its contents from the site.

While the building was old and needed to be demolished, it contained a selection of recovery and recycling machinery that was suitable for resale. SunSkips requested that this machinery be salvaged in a manner that would allow it to be sold on or sent to other sites.

The Red Leaf Enviro team set about the careful deconstruction of picking stations, conveyor belts, screeners, trommels and access walkways within the old facility. Removing nuts and bolts ensured the machinery left site in a condition that would allow it to be recommissioned after being sold on or moved to another site.

The equipment needed to be lifted from within the building carefully and safely, the Red Leaf Enviro team worked to remove roof sheeting and elements of the old building to allow the machinery to be extracted. A 100 tonne crane was then required to safely lift the machinery from within the building and to place it in temporary storage until it was ready to be removed from site.

Once the machinery had been deconstructed and removed from within the old facility, the demolition of the building could take place. This was a simple process and once completed the preparation work for a new concrete storage pad could begin. Initially the old concrete floor and foundation of the facility had to be removed as it was not safe or level enough to be used as storage or as a base for a new pad. Once broken up and removed from site, the Red Leaf Enviro team set about levelling and preparing the ground and pouring concrete to form the new pad.

The completion of this project provided SunSkips with a larger storage area on site, which increased the overall efficiency and throughput on site while also ensuring old machinery was reused and not simply thrown away.
