After a heavy machinery mishap on site at Urbaser’s household waste recycling facility in Tunbridge Wells damaged retaining walls and warehousing all work on site had to cease until the area was made safe and materials could begin to be unloaded into the storage bays. The financial implications for a prolonged shut down of the site meant that work needed to be undertaken ASAP.

Urbaser Ltd contacted Red Leaf Enviro for an emergency repair, our team were on site the same day to asses the damage. We found that a number of the retaining wall panels had been pushed into and through the steel framed warehouse in which they were situated, damaging the retaining wall panels, the concrete floor to which they were bolted and some of the cladding and steelwork of the warehouse. After assessing the damage, our team returned to HQ to gather the required materials to complete the repair. Within 48 hours we were back on site ready to begin repair work on the storage bays and warehouse structure.

Once the Red Leaf Enviro team arrived on site the damaged bays were dismantled and loose cladding was removed. Initially work focused on repairing the flooring, concrete repairs were made to the areas of damage caused by the bolts being pulled from the flooring and the concrete retaining wall panels being forced across it. Once this work had been completed the team worked to repair and replace the A-frame retaining wall panels, bolting them back into the floor and to one another. To provide more strength, steel splicing plates were fixed between every panel and it’s neighbours, using heavy duty bolt fixings.

Once these repairs and improvements had been completed, the team turned their attention to repairing the damage caused to the warehouse steelwork and cladding. Damaged steelwork was removed and replaced before new cladding was installed, during this time, new deflector plates were fitted to all the A-frame retaining that were located along the warehouse walls, replacing the OSB board that was previously used. This would allow for materials to be offloaded by lorry into the storage bays without any of the material falling behind the A-frames and becoming unreachable.

Overall the repair project was completed in under a week, with the Red Leaf Enviro team on site within 24hours of being contacted by Urbaser. Not only did the Red Leaf team complete the install in record time, allowing the facility to begin work again, but the additional work carried out such as the installation of splicing plates and deflector panels improved the strength and efficiency of the site.
