A household recycling centre managed by Buckinghamshire County Council experienced a serious fire in one of their materials storage bays. Which caused substantial damage to a number of concrete L-blocks within the storage bay, these blocks needed to be removed and replaced before the site could operate at full capacity once more.

Buckinghamshire County Council contacted Red Leaf Enviro to undertake the repair and replacement work on the materials storage bay. The Red Leaf team arrived on site swiftly to remove and replace the damaged concrete L-blocks, 20 in total blocks were removed and replaced by Red Leaf Enviro within 14 days.

It was decided by Buckinghamshire County Council that measures should be taken to ensure further damage could not be caused to the bay in future by fire. To this end the installation of a fire suppression system was discussed, with the system being held above the storage bay by a steel framed structure.

This would ensure that any future fires would be extinguished by the system before it is able to grow and cause substantial structural damage to the concrete storage bay.

The Red Leaf Enviro design team worked with Buckinghamshire County Council to create a specification and design for the steel frame system that would suit both Buckinghamshire County Council’s functionality requirements and budget. The Red Leaf fabrication team worked to fabricate the steel frame required for the fire suppression system, ready for delivery to site. Once delivered the skilled Red Leaf install team worked expertly to erect the new steel frame, using lifting and access equipment required to ensure the installation was completed in a safe and timely manner. Additionally, a run of heavy duty netting was fitted between the concrete L-blocks and steelwork to catch any material before it falls out of the bay, and also to provide a wind break to help stop material being moved around the bay.

Red Leaf Enviro’s quick response meant that the damage caused to the facility had minimal impact on site operations overall, and the deployment of an innovative design solution, within time and budget, protects the site from any future fire damage.
